I start by setting up the scene I want to paint. I realize that it is nothing like I imagined it and think about throwing it all in the garbage…..then I realize that my lighting needs work and begin working the light source until it looks pretty good. I then draw it out on the canvas or board and begin to paint it. It is a step by step process culminating in glazing and really accentuating the light. Note: (it is vital that your muse hold the light for your image as it gives it real life)

Wow, it turned out beautiful, Al!
Lighting is everything! Marc just built a still life box for me. I’ll take some pics on how it’s made and then I plan on painting it and setting up a still life. Really looking forward to it, you have inspired me to painting something classical!?

Thank you Naomi! I am moved by candle light and this painting was built around that. The drama is what I strive for…..
